2025 SAMUEL H. CLARK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Samuel H. Clark (1885 – 1979), is recognized as a Changemaker by the Library of Virginia and a 2022 Strong Men & Women in Virginia History honoree. During his over 50 years working for the Norfolk and Western Railway, Clark became President of the National Association of Railway Trainmen and Locomotive Firemen (ART&FL). Under his leadership, the union instigated cases with far reaching effects on labor. Two in particular led to 1944 Supreme Court rulings upholding African American railroad employee rights. Upon retirement, he served as President of the Montgomery Co./Radford City/Floyd Co. NAACP, emphasizing voter registration. These scholarship honor Clark's life and legacy.
